This is the 2nd book in the Harry Potter series. In this Harry meets the house elf Dobby. The defense against the dark arts is the popular Gilderoy Lockhart. He finds out that the hair of Slytherin has come to the school opened the chamber of secrets to let out a monster. Harry and Ron soon find out what the monster is when they find out that Hermione has been petrified because she saw the monster in a mirror. They find out that it is a basilisk. A serpent like animal that has a poison in its fangs that can only be cured by phoenix tears. Their phoenix Fawkes comes and heals Harry when he gets bitten. In this book Harry and Ron follow the spiders, bring back the petrified kids, finds out what happened to Moaning Myrtle one of the school ghosts who lives in the bathroom, helps Hagrid get out of Azkaban one of the jails and kills part of Voldemort.
